To all of our new Year 3 children, welcome to Rector Drew and to your new classes.
You have all been working really hard over the past couple of days to settle into your new class. You have had lots of information to remember such as how to line up in the morning, how to line up to go to the hall, where to sit in the hall, how to get your lunch…..etc! You have settled into the school routines brilliantly.
If you haven’t brought your PE kit into school yet, please could you bring it in on Monday ready for our PE lessons next week.
Remember you are able to bring a water bottle into school with you, so that you can have a drink in class during the school day. Especially as the weather is hot at the moment, typical that the weather is lovely now that we are back in school!!
HOMEWORK – 03/09/2010
Homework for this week is a ‘Learning Log’ activity.
Parents just so you know……we are not mean teachers giving the children homework on their very first week, the children actually asked to have homework, well 90% of them did!! The homework involves you describing an event (day trip, sports competition, family visit, etc) or holiday that you had during the summer holidays. You can draw, write, use photographs or any other medium to describe your event or holiday. Make your page look as interesting as possible by using colouring pencils to illustrate your work. Try to use all of the space around the task sheet. Please bring back your homework on Monday or Tuesday at the very latest. We hope you enjoy completing the task and we look forward to seeing what you got up to in the summer holidays and how you have presented your work on your page. Remember there is no right or wrong way to present your information on the page, it is totally up to you how you do it.
Have a great weekend. We look forward to seeing you all on Monday morning.

How fast have the holidays gone?!!
We hope you have all had a fantastic time and enjoyed having two weeks off school! We hope you have all kept yourselves safe. The weather is lovely at the moment, typical now that the holidays are coming to an end! Hopefully the weather will stay nice, which will mean that the field will be dry and fingers crossed you may be able to play on it next week.
Miss Williams was glad for Easter Sunday to come so that she could eat chocolate, crisps and biscuits again(which she gave up for lent!) She has definitely made up for not eating them for 40 days!
Enjoy your last few days off. We hope you’ve done your homework and that you have been practising your reading!!!!! Remember to bring P.E kits back in with you so that they are in school ready for P.E lessons. We will be doing most of our P.E outside now, unless the weather is bad, so remember to put trainers in your P.E bag.
See you all next week.

CONGRATULATIONS 3DJ ON YOUR WONDERFUL ASSEMBLY THIS MORNING – WHAT A SUCCESS!
English homework this week is to research “The story of Gelert”.
The children have until February 22nd to complete their research as they will then use their research to help them re-write their chosen story for our Eisteddfod competition.
For this year’s Eisteddfod we will be holding a “Chairing” ceremony for the best storywriter. The children will be writing the stories as part of their English lessons, therefore THEY SHOULD NOT WRITE THE STORY OUT AT HOME! All they have to do is find our about the plot, the characters, the setting etc and then compile this as a mind map, picture montage, scrap book etc – any way they choose to display the information they need for writing their version of the story.
The story is available to read on the internet but we also have copies of it in school for children who do not have access to the internet. You should also find copies in your local library.
Good luck with your research and we look forward to seeing all of the different ways you choose to present your findings.

The children have been busy rehearsing for their class assembly on Friday. If all goes as well as the rehearsals have then it will be a lovely performance for everyone to see.
The poems that some of the children are reading out are actually their own work, some of the words and phrases that the children have used are very imaginative and it was a pleasure for us to read them.
One of the songs that the children will be singing is a Welsh song called ‘Diolch am y gwanwyn’ which means ‘Thankyou for the Spring’ (something we are sure you are all looking forward to). For those struggling to read the words, dont worry we are spending time going over them. The tune that the song is sung to is ‘Morning is Broken’ which you may be more familiar with.
Dont forget – the children need to wear a colourful top to come to school in on Friday!
We are looking forward to seeing you on Friday.
Thankyou
Mrs Jones and Miss Williams.

During our English lessons this term we are going to be looking at Traditional Stories, for example, The 3 Billy Goat’s Gruff, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella etc. We will be looking at how these stories are structured, what is found in the beginning, middle and endings of the story. Where the settings of the stories usually are and what type of characters are normally found in this type of story. We will also be looking at how language is used in the stories e.g. repetition such as ‘Fee fi fo fum,’ ‘Run, Run as fast as you can ….’ etc.
For your homework this week you will be given the story of Goldilocks but it is not going to be written in the correct order. It is going to be your job to cut out sections of the story and stick them into the correct order into your homework books. Don’t forget to take your time cutting your work out so it is nice and neat in your homework books.
Have fun!

The children had a great time on their trip to Chester. They took part in Roman workshops which included designing mosaic patterns and putting back together a broken Roman jug (well done to Sam, Lucie and Caitlin 3DJ who managed to fit it back together, even though the grown ups struggled!). The children also had a lot of fun marching around Chester with the Roman Soldier, who was a very fast marcher – well done to the children for keeping up with him so well.
In the Roman gardens the soldier told us lots of very interesting information about life during Roman times – the piece of information that I’m sure that the children will always remember will be about the sponge on a stick – if they haven’t told you about it yet I’m sure they soon will. Sonny, Matthew and Bethan in class 3DJ had the misfortune of demonstrating how the stick would have been used. I’m sure there were also a few stiff necks this morning for the poor children who had to wear the Roman Soldiers helmet for part of their walk – Calum and Lucie we hope your not suffering too much!
The children had a good look around the museum after their walk and had the opportunity to buy some souvenirs. Well done to both classes for taking such interest in their trip and a big thank you to all the grown ups who volunteered to come along and help out.

Homework for this week is maths and your homework will help you to understand and use tally charts.
We use a tally chart in class – can anyone think of what our tally chart is?? For a copy of this weeks homework, please click on the link below:

Remember to stand in a safe place on the pavement to complete your homework or if you can see a road out of your bedroom window, maybe you could complete your homework there in the warmth! Keep yourselves safe.

Happy New Year Class 3DJ! We haven’t had a very good start to our new term but hopefully the weather will improve and we can all settle down to some interesting and exciting work. We would like to thank everybody very much for all the lovely Christmas presents that Miss Williams, Mrs Welsh and I received. We have been spoilt!
During this Spring Term our class can look forward to welcoming Miss Sian Graham who is a final year teaching student from Glyndwr University, Wrexham. Miss Graham will be working with the children until the end of term.
We have our trip to Chester next Tuesday for the Roman Experience. We will be ‘marching’ around Chester as Roman soldiers so please make sure the children are in their school uniforms and wrapped up warm.
I would like to take this opportunity to remind everyone to try their best to bring their reading record books and reading books into school daily. We endeavour to hear the children read individually once a week as well as guided reading on a Wednesday afternoon. The children also start the day with 10 minutes independent reading so their books are also needed for this. Also, don’t forget the children are rewarded with a housepoint if an adult has heard them read at home and records it in their reading record book.
Parent helpers are always welcome to come in to hear readers – we haven’t had any for a while, so any offers would be gratefully received!

Happy new year everyone!
We hope you had a fantastic Christmas and that you are enjoying your extended holiday!
As it was not possible for you to come into school today this meant that we could not give you your weekly spellings for you to learn ready for your spelling test next Friday. However, I will put this weeks spelling list below so that you can start to learn your spellings ready for next Friday. Please use the link below for the spelling list rather than the ‘Autumn spelling lists’ as we have changed a couple of words in the list. A copy of the spelling list is on the desk in school ready to be handed out on Monday. If you normally learn 2 columns for your spelling test then just practise 2 columns from this list, if you learn 3 columns then stick to 3 columns etc.
Year 3 List 11
**An extra task – we wonder how many times we wrote the word ‘list’ in this post?!!!!
If you have some spare time then try this ‘Who wants to be a millionaire’ quiz on the Celts and Romans below. You will need to put the quiz on slideshow straight away so that you don’t see any of the highlighted answers!! Hopefully you should know all of the answers to this quiz. Impress your parents by showing them how many questions you get correct. Unfortunately we don’t actually have a million pounds if you do get all of the questions right, so your prize will just be the knowledge that you know a lot about the Celts and Romans!!!! Let us know how you got on when you come back to school next week. Good luck!!
Who wants to be a millionaire quiz
Maybe you could think of some new questions and answers that we could put into another quiz.
We hope to see you all in school on Monday (Miss Williams will see you all on Thursday).
